In the hustle and bustle of getting ready to go on vacation we prepare for many things. But for many of us we forget about protecting our home while we travel. I have compiled a few tips about what to do about the place you will be leaving behind, your home. If you are able to do just a few of them there is a better likelihood your home will be just the way you left it.

One of the times your home is most vulnerable is when it is left empty for an extended period of time. Darkened windows, unretrieved mail or newspapers and closed windows in hotter weather all advertise your absence to a potential burglar.

The best protection for your home during your absence is to have a house sitter. A friend you trust staying at your house can take care of your pets and/or plants in addition to making sure the house is inhabited. Have a neighbor check on your home while you're away turning on lights, radios or TVs and opening and closing curtains will give your apartment the appearance that someone is home.

If you don't have a friend or neighbor to housesit or check your home while you're away -- perhaps even if you do - you should keep not only lights but also a TV or radio on a timer. If you're like me and have your TV on almost all the time you're home (NOTE: I don't watch it, it's just background noise while I work), the absence of the sound and that bluish light in the windows announces that you're not there (besides it keeps my pets company as well).

Make sure whoever is checking your home while you're away knows how to work your alarm system and who to call in case of a problem or emergency. Additionally be sure to leave contact numbers on how you can be reached as well. Unless you have a house sitter, stop your mail and any newspaper or other delivery. Nothing announces an empty home better than a stack of newspapers or an overflowing mailbox. Ask a nearby neighbor to pick up any packages delivered while you're gone.

If you have a garden or plants on your balcony like many apartment complexes do, make sure someone is watering the plants regularly or put the plants where they can't be seen. Plants slowly dying due to lack of water may announce your absence.
If you live in an apartment, check your lease. Many landlords require that you notify them if your apartment is going to be left empty for any period of time (this is so they can enter in case of emergency even if they can't reach you). If you've got a house sitter this normally isn't necessary.

Above is just some common sense tips, maybe they can help you jog you mind and you will think of a few others. There is nothing worse than coming home from a wonderful time on vacation to find that your home has been violated.

We are always a bit reluctant to take a vacation because of the money and time off work, but sometimes we NEED it. Here are some great reasons to go take a vacation:

It may be mandatory. Companies make more money when they have happier, well-balanced employees.
You deserve it. Life isn't about work always You need to give yourself a reward for your hard work.
Your family deserves it. On your vacation, you can really have that quality time with them that you sometimes miss out on when you work so much.
It just plain fun. The planning, the packing and then the going is just good healthy fun. And speaking of healthy, that brings us to the best reason of all for taking a good long vacation, which is . . .
It's healthy to go on a vacation. You will be mentally refreshed when you return to work.

Just as your body needs rest at night and some time away from work as you spend time with your family, friends, church or social organizations, we need a week away each year to recharge our batteries and get our energies back to go after the work world again.
In addition to the mental aspect, you will have a vast physical transformation. You will be healthier and you will exude well-being.
Sometimes a vacation is the best thing you can do for yourself. You'll be more creative and mentally sharp. You'll have a higher capacity for learning after relaxing and sight-seeing for a week.
The new, refreshed, post-vacation you will be more productive at work and home. You'll be mentally and physically refreshed. You'll be able to concentrate better and have more overall well-being.

Fun things to do on your vacation!!!

That's the intent of this article, to wake up some ideas in your head, and plan for things to do in Florida and any of your travels.

When we venture down to Florida or anywhere for that fact of the matter, we first figure out what activities we definitely don't want to miss. Here is our list of favorite things to do on vacation…

1. Sit on the beach and play in the ocean. This is a no brainer. We love to walk the beach, bathe in the sun, play in the waves, and watch the beautiful people. What types of things do you do on your vacation? What activities do you have planned? Do you relax, go active, or a little of both? 2. Play golf. Golf is a great game. There are excellent golf courses all over the world to choose from and you can even plan an entire golf vacation.

3. Go fishing. Deep sea fishing or fishing from a pier is a blast. If you have never done this try it once, you'll love it.

4. Other sporting activities like scuba, snorkeling, water skiing, parasailing, renting jet skis, or whatever. There are a ton of water activities to choose from.

5. Day trips and tours are awesome choices. Rent a boat for the day. Take a barefoot cruise. Venture over to Orlando and go to Disney World or any theme park. Dinner cruises, exploring, hiking, tours at local sites, and anything else that you can think of.

6. Go shopping! Yes, the ladies will love this one and probably already have it planned. I hate to shop, but it is actually fun when I am on vacation. It wears me out though. Take some extra money and visit the local shops, find souvenirs, and spend some of that hard-earned money.

7. Drive around. We have rented convertibles or motorcycles for a couple of days and just explored the area. One time, we went from Miami to Key West and spent the day there. Another time, we traveled up the A1A highway along the Atlantic Coast of Florida, enjoying the luxurious homes, yachts, and views. You can even do this as a weekend getaway. Find a cool spot that's only 6 hours or less away and take off. We always have fun doing this.

8. Take in local entertainment, events, restaurants, and such. Go dancing, find the best watering holes, do something romantic, party likes its 1999. Remember, you are on vacation and it's time to have some fun and do stuff you don't usually get to do at home.

The list is as endless as your imagination. These are just a few general ideas that we always plan on doing. Be creative and try new things.

A beach vacation is perfect for somebody who wants to relax, put their feet up, and soak up some rays. Sure, you could go to an amusement park, but you would spend most of your time standing in line. Wouldn’t it be more fun to have a day on the beach where you can soak up some rays, take a swim, or do whatever you want? In addition, most hotels by the beach are much cheaper than those by major amusement parks. When you add up the lower prices of hotels, cheaper food, and the lack of an entrance fee, it is easy to see how a beach vacation is much more economical than any other type of vacation. While some of the more famous beaches, like a Myrtle Beach vacation rental, are costly most beaches provide fun in the sun for no charge.

Safety tips for a Beach Vacation.

If you don’t know how to stay safe on a beach, it can be very dangerous. Here are some tips on how to stay safe on a beach vacation: Know the tides. Incoming tides separate rocks from headlands and the shore. Avoid the temptation of strolling out to an interesting rock without knowing when the tide rolls back in. Free tide tables are readily available at state park offices, information centers and many shops and motels. Another safety tip is to be careful around high steep cliffs. Many beaches have natural forming cliffs. Why these do make fine lookout points, be aware that the cliff edge may be unstable.

Universally, the term “gone fishing” is associated with vacations. In that case planning a fishing vacation should be nothing more then a natural choice. Fishing combines sport, relaxation, communing with nature and free food and hence qualifies as the perfect vacation. If you're looking for an adventurous and safe way to enjoy yourself, consider sailing vacations. With a variety of locations and packages, sailing vacations call to the explorer in everyone.Sailing vacations are offered in such diverse spots as the Great Lakes, Maine, the Caribbean and India. What if you want the barebones experience but have never set foot on a sailboat? How is food handled? Who provides it? If this is a crewed ship, does the crew cook? Do you have a responsibility for feeding them? Sailing vacations will be much more fun with a full stomach, especially if you know in advance who is expected to do the cooking.
Make sure you find out before your trip what clothing is appropriate. While sailing vacations in the Caribbean will likely be much warmer than some other locales, being on open water may be significantly cooler than you'd expect.
Other questions to ask of the outfitter or sailing company include how many people will comfortably fit on the boat? What are the sleeping accommodations? This is important to know. If you aren't getting enough sleep, it may ruin your sailing vacations.
What facilities are there? How do you take care of waste? While these are very basic questions and not something most people want to think about, knowing ahead of time will help ensure all your sailing vacations are fun, not drudgery.
What emergency procedures are in place in case of a problem? While the likelihood is nil of a company letting you sail out with the threat of a hurricane, Mother Nature likes to shake things up once in a while and sailing vacations aren't immune. Is there more than one radio? How many batteries? Life preservers? Flotation devices? Emergency rations? No, this isn't the most enjoyable topic when considering a vacation, but it's one that is vital to your continued good health.

European Vacation

A European vacation with your family is one of the most exciting and educational things you can do together. Train travel allows you to see the beautiful countryside in detail, and you can do it at a great discount.A European vacation has so much to offer, you will have to decide ahead of time what kind of vacation you want. You can travel from Madrid to Paris, then Rome, trying to see all the sights along the way as you rush by. This can be fun because you are seeing and doing so much, there is no way to be bored, and you will remember the trip forever. The downside is that you don't get to feel as much of the local culture and lifestyle when you are rushing through. Spending some of your European vacation in the same place and getting to know some of the locals can be much more satisfying and relaxing.
It all depends on your personality and what you are looking for in a vacation. A lot of people like to travel by train for their vacation so that they can see more areas, getting great pictures, and they will be able to say they have seen all of those famous landmarks. Some people would rather pick a place and spend the whole time there, really soaking in the atmosphere with their family and getting to know the customs.
Some of you may prefer to combine the two options for a European vacation that I have described above. Pick a city, like Madrid for example. Fly into Madrid, get a nice hotel, and stay there for about a week. There are many beautiful monuments and sights to see, and you can walk around downtown and see them up close and personal. You can eat at some local restaurants, take short day trips to see other areas of the city, and come back to your hotel in the evening.
When your week is up, you can travel by train to continue your European vacation in the sunny southern province of Andalucia. This area of Spain has beaches on both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The weather is hot and sunny from spring through the fall, and the climate is dry. The beaches are fine, white sand and amazing blue water. Tourists from all over the world, and especially from the rest of Europe, fill these beaches every summer. Take at least a week and find a hotel or villa near the beach. You can spend every day at the beach working on your tan, relaxing in the warm sun, and swimming in the crystal blue waters. The seafood is spectacular in southern Spain, and you will have no problem finding great restaurants with mouth-watering food at great prices. If you like to go out at night, there are more bars and nightclubs than you can possibly visit. You can be sure that you can stay out dancing as long as you want to.
When you are done relaxing in a sunny beach town, you can fly or travel by train to vacation in Paris for a week. There are all kinds of historic sites and museums to see. You can walk or take a bus around to see all of the areas of the city, enjoy French restaurants, and soak in the culture. When you are all done, you can fly home again, knowing that you saw a vast amount of historic and cultural sites, beautiful countryside, and had a great time at the beach relaxing. A little bit of everything, to make your European Vacation complete.

Are you ready for the perfect experience? Let me tell you a tale….
Jumping into my western wear pulling on my cowboy boots and putting on my hat, causes my blood to stir. Today is my first time in a bunk house but I’m not alone. There are fifteen other greenhorns or tender foots with me. Most of my comrades are city folk. Sure we’ve all seen a horse but it was on TV or at the parade. Today we get to experience the real thing. The question that flashes through my mind is whether I am ready to learn to saddle that wild snorting beast.
The door opens and in steps the lead hand. He says “the first order of business today is to head of to the corral for a lesson on saddling our horses.” So off we go. I look for the smallest beast I can find who’s over in the far side of the corral. Yup that one’s for me. As I tip my hat and approach the small gray mare grazing at the feed trough I’m a little surprised.
Well actually it’s more like I’m shocked. That small gray mare stands over a foot taller than me. Wow! now what to do. After all who am I kidding, I’m no cowboy. But with some help I managed to saddle the monster. Swinging up into the saddle my mind drifts to a western movie with me as the trail boss setting off on a cattle drive.
Suddenly with the movement of my steed I instantly come back to my senses to realize this beautiful beast is walking out of the corral and I’m about to experience my first adventure. After many miles of riding along a cool grassy plain our group of tender foots comes upon a small steam. Perfect, it’s time for a rest.
I swing out of my saddle. My legs and rear end feel like they’ve had had the flesh peeled right off of them. The excruciating pain leaves me moving pretty slow. It seems to take an eternity to be able to sit down on the cool grass. Wow I must be a wuss I think. Even with my aching body I feel an exhilaration like I’ve not ever felt before.
Looking at the other riders it appeared that they too had suffered this same fate. Yet even with this new found pain there is a smile of contentment on all the tender foots faces. As we stretch out and relax we realize the power of nature that is forgotten in the city.
My wild snorting beast is down at the stream drinking water with the other horse. After the horses have a rest it’s time to get back on the trail. Mounting my horse was as pain full as the dismount was and I cringe as I struggle into place.
My gray mare refreshed from her break was ready to go. But with each step we took on the slow ride back I was reminded of the tremendous beating my back side was taking. The chaffing of the in side of the legs were almost as bad. I was certain I was going to be a raw piece of meat by the time we returned. Looking back at the old cowboy who was our guide I saw a relaxed toughen real cowboy. I wondered how it took him to toughen up.
Back at camp after a slow dismount and some slow stretches it was time to find some grub. Funny by the time we sat down to a heaty meal the soreness had began to pass and each of us was looking forward to the next days adventure. Perhaps it didn’t take that long to toughen us city folks up afterall.
Conversation was hearty and load at the table as we busily exchanged ideas about our first day as a cowboy on the trails. There was excitement, pride, and an over all feeling of accomplishment. So this is how the real cowboy’s felt after a day on the range. Perhaps there really was something missing in city life.
By the end of my vacation the gray wild snorting horse turned out to be my greatest companion on all our daily rides. The name of the gray is Calaway. If you ever get the chance to ride this horse you will be pleased with her steady but gentle manor. Even my red western wear shirt, tan boots and my large white hat never spooked her. After all she is used to carrying and caring for plenty of want to be cowboys and cowgirls giving each a story and adventure all of their own.
If you ever get a chance to take a cowboy vacation on a Texas Dude Ranch you should. I guarantee you will not be disappointed! It will be one of the best experiences you’ll ever have, leaving you with the memory of light blowing summer breezes, soft scented wild flowers, deep blue crystal clear water, and gently sloping mountain trails.
The life of a cowboy may be filled with hard work but it’s a lifestyle that no other can compete with. There are few cowboys that would be willing to give it up. For just a couple of weeks you too can enjoy the life of a cowboy.

Don't Burden Yourself on Vacation, Pack Light

When I was backpacking through Europe and staying in hostels, I met a 56-year-old woman who was traveling around the world. Eileen related to me the story of how she started her trip with three suitcases and a carry-on. The three suitcases were too much for her to maneuver in planes, trains, buses, airports and stations. Three weeks into her trip, she had purchased a small backpack and had discarded 80 percent of the stuff she started with.

Though this story is exceptional because Eileen was traveling around the world, a trip that she expected to last a year, and she started with an oppressive amount of luggage, the lesson learned can be taken to heart by the traveler in all of us whether we're going to San Francisco for the weekend or to New Dehli for a few weeks. Packing light enables you to easily maneuver yourself and your belongings through all the mazes of airports, train stations and bus stations.

How do you go about packing light? Well, packing light requires a special mindset when you are packing. First, you may want to start with a goal in mind. For example, you may want to fit everything required for a trip in a small piece of checked luggage or go one step further and aim for carry-on sized luggage only. Also, you really ought to save some space in that luggage for any souvenirs that you want to bring home.

After you have selected your desired luggage size, start planning and laying out all the clothes, toiletries and personal items that you think you'll need. You may want to check the weather report for your destination so you'll know the types of clothes you'll need. Once you have everything spread out on your bed, go through each item and determine if it is essential. If an item is not absolutely essential, leave it behind.

Determine the precise number of outfits that you'll need and don't pack a single piece of clothing more. Try to coordinate your clothing so that you can reuse items, such as pants, jeans or skirts, multiple times. Your goal is to be comfortable, not necessarily to look great.

If you are going on a trip that is more than one week, take one week's worth of clothing and then washing it while on your trip. Going to the laundromat in a foreign country is a great way to become acquainted with the culture. View it as an opportunity, not a hassle. Alternatively, you may be able to wash some items in the sink at your hotel.

Remember that you are going on vacation, so is it really necessary to bring your laptop or your PDA. Aren't you going on vacation to get away from all that. You'll likely be able to access an Internet cafe at your destination, another perfect opportunity to learn more about the local culture. If you're an avid reader, pick one book to bring and when you're done swap it with someone that you meet in your hotel, another opportunity to extend yourself beyond your normal preferred reading.

The reason that you are traveling is to relax, to explore another location, to expand your horizons and to connect with the culture and people of your destination. Laundromats, Internet cafes and book swapping are all excellent ways to fulfill the purpose of travel.

Don't be oppressed by large and heavy luggage that restricts your movement like a ball and chain clamped to your ankle. Eileen was a lot happier without her blow-dryer and you will be too. Free yourself to really get out there and enjoy your vacation.

Cheap Vacations - Ten Ideas

Cheap vacations can still be relaxing, fun and whatever else you want them to be. Unlike cars and shoes, vacations don't get better according to price. Give up that expensive resort if you don't have the money, but don't give up your vacation. Try one of the following ideas instead.

1. Visit your friends. The key here is to have friends with spare beds that live in interesting places. You've probably had friends tell you to come and stay a while, so why not take them up on it? I'm hoping my friends move to Hawaii.

2. Caretaking vacations. Someone in California, Costa Rica or Colorado wants you to stay in their house while they're away. You'll have to water the plants, and maybe watch the cat, but you'll get to stay in a beautiful home. You may even get paid. 3. Outdoor vacations. Outdoor adventure doesn't need to be expensive. Just stay close to home, and use your imagination. On "Tom Sawyer Day" we hike up a river for hours, then build a raft from dead trees. Then we float on it back to the car. It's cheaper and more fun than a guided river trip. Where can you hike or bicycle for free?

4. Treasure hunting. Take a trip to a ghost town or beach with a metal detector. In Arizona an old Mayan Indian showed us where to find arrowheads, semi-precious stones, and ancient pottery. Treasure hunting is cheap, and you might find something valuable as well.

5. Cheap beach combing vacations. What's more relaxing than sitting on the beach with a drink? Restless? Start collecting seashells and driftwood. Bring a metal detector to find more valuable things. There are beaches in Florida where you can camp in your RV, and cheap motels on or near the beaches in Michigan.

6. Stay home. Make a list of sights to see, and things you've always wanted to do that are within an hour of home. Spend a weekend or a week checking off your list. No expensive hotels or long-distance drives.

7. Shopping trips. Cheap vacations don't normally involve shopping, but they can. Visit flea markets and rummage sales in some scenic corner of the country. Have a shopping adventure for less than a day at the mall.

8. Hotspring vacations. Hotsprings in many parts of the United States are free or inexpensive to use. Camp in an R.V. or tent to keep it really cheap. Spend nights around the campfire and days soaking in hot water. My personal favorite is a beautiful place in Arizona (106 degree water), with hiking trails. We paid the $30 annual fee and stayed more than a week.

9. Greyhound bus travel. Taking the bus is an alternative to expensive gasoline if you're traveling alone, and the trip itself is sure to be an adventure. Pick a nice place within a day's ride, pack a bag and go.

10. Camping vacations. In Florida we stalked alligators and watched a dozen other forms of wildlife. Every night we sat around the fire with new friends from England and Texas. We escaped winter there for eight days in our van. There were hot showers, and the campground was free. Camping can be the cheapest of cheap vacations.
